The transition from conventional fixed network technology TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) to the new system environment, which is based on Internet protocol—and hence is IP-based, which it is usually called—conforms to a worldwide trend. Conventional fixed network telephony has already seen its best days, and is now being replaced by IP technology. In the future, all fixed network services (and telephony as well) will run over IP and hence over one and the same network.
Our CFS colleague Urs Kaufmann oversaw the extensive decommissioning work in Lucerne as the site manager and described to us how it was possible to complete the project very successfully with a great deal of heart and soul.
Due to its many advantages, IP technology has been established with large customers for a long time. That way, you have access to your data with any device and at any time and from anywhere. People, devices and data are connected together, and the customer experience becomes noticeably better. Private persons will also profit from this technology change in the future.
To make the new form of communication possible nationwide, cablex needs many diligent colleagues from the Customer Field Service, Infrastructure and Telecommunications business units. They are on the job on behalf of Swisscom to remove the conventional fixed network technology equipment.
Our ICT technicians from CFS Core have been working for several years on decommissioning in the larger Swisscom buildings before these are leased otherwise. Now, since Customer Field Service is established at cablex, the success story of CFS is continuing.
Two pilot projects were carried out at the beginning of the year in Ermatingen and Gerlingen—both to the complete satisfaction of our customer Swisscom. We have now won additional orders in public tenders, which will be implemented in the next weeks and months.
One of the biggest decommissioning projects was just completed in Lucerne. Both the data centre as well as the conventional fixed network technology were deinstalled. This order comprised around 1200 hours of work, and the team consisted of 15 persons, of which up to eight colleagues were working on-site at the same time.
All components had to be pre-sorted for a recycling company and prepared for the return in roll-off containers or on pallets. First, all the wiring was removed from the metal racks, and the racks were made available for disposal. Afterwards, all the cables that were installed under the floor plates were removed.
The various components were pre-sorted and made available for removal on a total of around 75 Euro pallets and in six 36 cubic metre roll-off containers. The CFS team handed over the premises swept-clean so that they were ready for the future renters to move in.
The success of the project with the end customer was decided by the harmonious working relationship with each other. For example, the offers were prepared in the Telecommunications business unit and passed on to colleagues in the Customer Field Service and Infrastructure areas when the order was received.
The expertise and many years of experience of the employees was called for during the installation work. Work was often carried out on electrical connections with 48 and 230 volts. Proficient use of electrical installation experts was also called for here.
