More efficiency through site consolidation.Three in one.

Three in one.

The new cablex B-Site in Schmerikon has been ready to be moved into since 1 March 2020. The former Kaltbrunn site offices, the Kaltbrunn warehouse and Civil Work from Altendorf will be united under one roof. Through the consolidation of the three units in one location, communication channels will be shortened, exchange between the units simplified and duplication prevented.

Important criteria during the search for a new site were the size, transport connections and the consolidation of warehouse and office in a single location. Schmerikon can fulfil all of these requirements.

Why is this consolidation taking place?

The initial situation and the reason behind the consolidation was that the conditions at the Kaltbrunn and Altendorf sites did not meet the needs of the Units.

Over many years, we had to deal with the fact that the offices and warehouse in Kaltbrunn were at separate locations, three to five minutes apart by car.

In addition, there was not much room at the former C-Site location and the facilities were out of date.

The Civil Work site in Altendorf stems from the takeover of Meier AG in 2018. Back then, the specialists in cable laying and public works from Wilen (SZ) were consolidated in the Infrastructure unit. The aim of the takeover was to strengthen Civil Work Switzerland-wide and to offer customers a more complete and flexible range of services. With the company takeover, the fleet of construction machinery and lease agreements were transferred to cablex. Public Works also had to find a new location because the warehouse no longer met the safety standards of cablex.

Thus, the idea of the C-Site Kaltbrunn was born, uniting the Kaltbrunn warehouse and the Altendorf Public Works site at a common location.

The search for a suitable site.

Important criteria during the search for a new site were the size, transport connections and the consolidation of warehouse and office in a single location. Schmerikon can fulfil all of these requirements.

The space was previously used by a paint shop. It has undergone extensive renovations and the layout has been changed. New walls were installed on the second floor for a meeting room, a break room, a focus room and a printing room. In addition, the floor was levelled, carpet laid, a kitchen fitted and lighting installed. A shower was installed on the first floor. The reconstruction measures took four months.

The office has room for 34 workplaces. Twelve to thirteen people are working at the new location at the moment.

 Business units represented in Schmerikon:

  • CBU EBW 1 (Network Construction) 11 emp
  • CBU RUN (Measurement Technology) 5 emp
  • CBU RUN OVL (Overhead Cables) 3 emp
  • WPE (Work Preparation) 1 emp
  • ENG (Project Planning, Engineering) 2 emp
  • TEN (Mobile, Salt, UPC) 2 emp
  • CFS (Rapperswil region, Team Leader) 2 emp

The advantages of the new Schmerikon site are obvious: Through the centralisation at a single location, communication channels will be shortened, exchange between the units simplified and duplication prevented. The more efficient workload distribution saves time and effort.

How do you organise moving three locations at once?

"The organization is actually quite simple, for me," quips Johann Tschudi, specialist manager at the Kaltbrunn site. "You only have to decide what will definitely be needed at the new location; the rest is disposed of. This simple measure allows the volume of the move to be calculated correctly and answers the question as to how many pallets, lorry journeys and how many people will be needed to complete the task. The biggest challenge is logistics. Hubert Zollet had to organise seven people to conduct the move while also keeping the day-to-day business running."

As the old office furniture of the Kaltbrunn site is being given back, the employees merely had to bring their laptops and some folders to their new workplaces. A modern, optimally equipped office with new screens, desks, tables and docking stations was ready for them in to move into in Schmerikon on 1 March 2020. The installation of the new workplaces and the liquidation of the old office was completed within two weeks.

Moving the Kaltbrunn warehouse.

Together with colleagues from Fribourg, Bern and the Zurich area, Logistic Head Hubert Zollet moved the entire volume of the Kaltbrunn warehouse to Schmerikon in two days. Due to the move of Public Works from Altendorf to the new location, the warehouse can also be supervised logistically from now on. It took two months to move the warehouse, including lead time and loading the shelves at the new location.

Challenges of the site consolidation.

Daily business had to continue during the move. For a short period of time, it was necessary for employees to commute between the warehouses of the old and new locations. The additional time required for this was minimised by equipping the construction machinery with sufficient material in advance and by making some material available at both locations. Another challenge was guaranteeing a reliable flow of information during the move. Every employee had to be informed about what steps would be relevant for them at what point in time.

What will happen to the old sites?

An artist is moving into the offices of the Kaltbrunn site. The owner is moving back into the warehouse in Kaltbrunn and using it for their own purposes. The Altendorf site has found a new tenant. The handover date for the former locations is at the end of March 2020.

Volume.

120 Euro-pallets, altogether 5 lorry runs and 2 lorry runs with trailer.

After completing the move, the warehouse activities are now being established and operations are beginning. A streamlining of the range is planned for reasons of space.
