When utility lines have to be laid or pulled through into buildings, this usually involves excavation work. Rod pushers mean there is no need to dig any trenches. This precisely controllable process is used primarily for house connections. The customer's home and surroundings are hardly affected by the rod pusher, gardens remain undamaged, and road traffic restrictions are also reduced.

From 3 to 5 September 2021, Lenzerheide, Graubünden, became a mountain bike hotspot. The Mountain Bike World Cup took place with the disciplines Cross-Country Short Track, Cross-Country Olympic and Downhill. Together with colleagues from Swisscom, cablex ensured Wi-Fi coverage for the entire sporting event and enabled worldwide direct transmission.

This year, we are delighted to welcome to cablex 14 new colleagues who are starting training as linesmen with a Federal VET Diploma specialising in telecommunications, electrical fitters with a Federal VET Diploma or assembly electricians with a Federal VET Diploma. Unfortunately, we were only able to recruit male career starters this year.

It happened at around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, 22 August 2021. Close to the border with South Tyrol, in Val Müstair (Graubünden), a landslide occurred after heavy rainfall, which buried the cantonal road. Copper lines were damaged in the process; these served approximately 600 people in the region with fixed-network telephone, Internet and TV connections.

The transportation of antennas and accessories is difficult, time-consuming and costly, especially in impassable mountain regions. Mountain railways are in operation and restaurants cater for their guests. Network reception is guaranteed by mobile communications antennas. The masts for the antennas are sometimes flown in by helicopter. A time-consuming but very exciting task, which is coordinated by our WIRELESS team.

In the night of Saturday 26 to Sunday 27 June 2021, a fault report of the highest priority was received by Swisscom: Cable fire in Cham, Canton of Zug. Numerous cables were completely destroyed. Several hundred Swisscom customers and other Telekom providers were without landline, internet and TV connection. cablex instantly mobilised all available teams and was on the spot immediately to give their best.

A total of 26 power line technician apprentices in their 2nd year of apprenticeship completed their second technical ICC (inter-company course). The stars of this four-day course were fibre-optic cables, also known as optical fibre cables. From cable routing to cable processing and splicing – the apprentices have received comprehensive information on fibre optic cables and can now put the knowledge they have acquired into practice point by point. After these four days, the 26 apprentices are even more experienced and are now one step closer to completing their apprenticeship.

On the evening of 23 November 2020, Maroggia mill by Lake Lugano, which is over 150 years old, burnt down to its foundation walls. The fire also damaged the mobile communications antennae of Swisscom and Salt, which were situated on the roof of the grain silo belonging to the mill. This resulted in considerable disruption to the mobile communications network. cablex was on location with almost all of its business units and proved to its customers how strongly it can act thanks to its diverse business areas and good regional coordination.

In Switzerland, especially in its rural areas, there are about 500,000 wooden overhead poles. As part of the basic supply for all Swiss citizens, Swisscom must guarantee access to the telephone network and data transmission in all areas. The above-ground supply line is usually the most low-cost variant. According to the Swiss Federal Inspectorate for Heavy Current Installations (ESTI), the poles, which play a supporting role in the above-ground system in the truest sense of the word, must be inspected every ten years. Hence a good two dozen technicians from Customer Field Service dedicate themselves to checking about 47,000 poles every year between March and October.

The Société de la Loterie de la Suisse Romande (Romandy Lottery) (the company that operates the lottery in Romandy) was faced with the challenge of expanding its digital network for distributing its games and optimising costs. The existing network did not allow either of these, so they looked for a customer-focused solution together with Swisscom. The solution was found in the form of the innovative network solution Enterprise Connect. As part of this new direction, customer field service technicians installed new routers at 2500 networked Romandy Lottery sales outlets in French-speaking Switzerland.

A major incident was triggered in Monthey in the canton of Wallis late in the afternoon of 12 November 2020. The major disruption was caused by a Wallis construction company. While ramming down a road and the parallel railway line, a Swisscom pipe was damaged. The disruption affected about 1500 customers. Starting in autumn 2020, they will be gradually replaced by smart information displays (SIDs). Unbelievable but true: Until 1903, the maximum load that a person was allowed to carry in Switzerland was 125 kilograms! The Federal Council then set appropriate limits. As a rule, the manual lifting of loads should be kept to a minimum and mechanical aids should be used whenever possible. The manhole covers that our employees move several times a day weigh up to 430 kilograms. It is therefore a matter of extreme importance for cablex and the safety managers in the BSE unit to always refer people to suitable lifting equipment and the right technology.

Business Unit Fibre to the Street (FTS) has only just presented the development of the QA app. With this application, it is possible to track and document the physical operations of network construction, from the civil engineering up to the switch-over. “Additional measures for process optimisation” were announced. The transition from conventional fixed network technology TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) to the new system environment, which is based on Internet protocol—and hence is IP-based, which it is usually called—conforms to a worldwide trend. Conventional fixed network telephony has already seen its best days, and is now being replaced by IP technology. In the future, all fixed network services (and telephony as well) will run over IP and hence over one and the same network.

Now that the Ceneri Base Tunnel has been put into operation, the New Railway Link through the Alps (NRLA) is complete. The continuous flat-rail route from Altdorf to Lugano would not have become a reality without the 15.4 km base tunnel under the Ceneri. On 31 August 2020, the Ceneri Base Tunnel was handed over to Swiss Federal Railways right on schedule. And with that, the operator SBB is now the owner of the Ceneri Base Tunnel. This milestone draws cablex's largest ever technology project to a close after five and a half years. A good time, then, to take a look back and review the most important phases for cablex.

In future, double-decker trains are to run on the section between Brig and Lausanne. In order to realise this project of the SBB, a railway bridge in Montreux will be demolished and rebuilt at the same location in line with the new requirements. Pipes run through the existing bridge containing copper and optical fibre cables of Swisscom. At the beginning of June 2020, cablex received the order to reroute these cables to enable the bridge to be demolished. The time frame of two months until demolition was very short...

The Fibre to the Street (FTS) and Business Excellence (BSE) business units have developed an app together during a joint project. With this application, all work steps related to network construction, from civil engineering to the switching and expansion of the XGS PON site, can now be tracked and documented using digital checklists. Of the numerous apprentices in Switzerland who completed their apprenticeships as network electricians in July 2020, two from the ranks of cablex managed to stand out from the crowd.‑ Toni Markov gained the best marks in Switzerland with a grade of 5.7. With a final grade of 5.3, Tomislav Vukovac shared first place in the Canton of Zurich with two other graduates as the best network electrician with a Swiss Federal Certificate of Proficiency. Behind the extremely good achievements of this new generation are very personal motivations and the realisation that it is never too late to dedicate yourself to something.

cablex was involved in modernising the railways at the Swiss Rhine Ports Basel-Kleinhüningen, Birsfelden and Muttenz Auhafen from 2017 to 2020. The Infrastructure Business Unit layed the electrical and data cabling of the safety systems as a subcontractor of Siemens AG. In addition, diverse distribution systems and junction boxes were installed along the tracks. Another bid was won from Hafenbahn Schweiz AG in September 2019 to replace the rail yard lighting in Kleinhüningen.

Following on from the refurbishment of the Sachseln Tunnel, which cablex reported about in July 2019, the Soliwald Tunnel will be renovated this year. Various tunnels along the A8 motorway are being upgraded for safety reasons under the auspices of the Federal Roads Office ASTRA. cablex is planning and implementing the technology in the new escape tunnel and installing the new passageway and adaptive lighting.

Their work does not start with the installation of a traffic light system, for example, but earlier on, as they also have to ensure the construction sites are safe -  for their own protection and that of all road users.

At the beginning of 2020, cablex started to perform 5G in-house installations for various customers. The focus throughout Switzerland has initially been placed on Swisscom shops and railway stations. Plans then envisage moving on to shopping centres and football stadiums. The 4x4 MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) technology used results in an enormous increase in speed and capacity.

During work on the trackbed at Lyss railway station, a construction company damaged a cable conduit. Sheet piling which was mechanically rammed into the ground cut through multiple copper and fibreglass cables. There was considerable damage, which meant that 2,200 Swisscom customers had to do without Internet, television, mobile communication and telephones.

Elias and Philipp from the Oftringen site have made themselves available to demonstrate the correct handling of the protective equipment. At the same time, the use of protective equipment such as face masks, goggles and gloves shown here can be applied to all areas of everyday life.

On 8 April, cablex received a very high priority incident notification: The drilling machine of a construction company cut several optical fibre and copper cables during the course of its work. In February 2020, the four-day industry-wide training (ÜK) for network electricians in the telecommunications sector took place. Six of the sixteen 2nd year apprentices are completing three-year apprenticeships at cablex. This part of the TEL 2 course was organised and supervised (technically) by Diamond SA along with its partner companies Netcom AG and Mesomatic Messtechnik AG. cablex monitored the courses, held in German, French and Italian, and supported students on site.

The City of Zurich Traffic Department developed the City Traffic 2025 strategy to ensure a flow of traffic that is as safe and smooth as possible. During the course of this project, the control units as well as parts of the outdoor installations (traffic lights, control units, tactile pedestrian pushbuttons with vibration, etc.) are to be replaced by the year 2025 for 400 city traffic control systems. Siemens Mobility AG is allowed to carry out the implementation for 210 traffic control Systems.

As a partner of Siemens Mobility, cablex takes over the conversion of the outdoor installations and replacement of the control units. This means that cablex realises its first big project in this new traffic engineering line of business.

When the streets of Zermatt are still free of snow in the off-season and the number of tourists is still relatively low, the construction machines move into the well-known Valais mountain village. In a breath-taking autumn atmosphere, cablex installed 250 micro CANs in 12 lots on behalf of Swisscom. At 130 locations, fibre is being laid into the buildings (Fibre to the Building or FTTB) and at 120 locations it will run up to the nearest shaft, Fibre to the Street (FTTS). The construction period of the project is three years, as the construction work in car-free Zermatt can only be carried out in May and October.

Die Einbauarbeiten der Bahntechnik im Ceneri-Basistunnel (CBT) wurden im August 2019 erfolgreich abgeschlossen. Dies umfasst die Fahrleitung, Bahnstrom- sowie Stromversorgung, Kabel-, Telekommunikations- und Funkanlagen. Parallel zu den Einbauarbeiten werden intensive Teilprüfungen in den zwei Einspurröhren sowie in den Bahntechnikgebäuden umgesetzt. Die Arbeitsgemeinschaft CPC (cablex, PORR), sowie die AlpTransit Gotthard AG und SBB werden den Tunnel und die Einrichtungen auf Herz und Nieren prüfen. Umfassende Abnahmebegehungen sind für Herbst / Winter 2019 vorgesehen. Die Abnahmebegehung, die mit bis zu 60 Fachleuten durchgeführt wird, umfasst dabei jeden Tunnel-Meter, insgesamt 48 Querschläge sowie die Installationen. Die fahrplanmässige Inbetriebnahme des Ceneri-Basistunnels durch die SBB erfolgt im Dezember 2020.

Fibre optic cable connections from a central exchange to the apartments, which will provide a very high data transmission capacity, is increasingly being demanded by many building owners. Die Noten sind bereits relevant für das Qualifikationsverfahren (QV) der Lehrabschlussprüfung, das die Lernenden im Frühling 2021 erwartet.

Vor diesem Hintergrund begann Julia vor einem Jahr bei cablex ihre Vorlehre zur Netzelektrikerin mit dem Schwerpunkt Telekommunikation. In diesem Jahr konnte sie sich intensiv mit dem Beruf auseinandersetzen, sodass sie im August 2018 – mit dem Beginn ihrer dreijährigen Ausbildung – sicher sein konnte, dass dies die richtige Berufslehre für sie ist.

In the night of Tuesday, 17 April 2018, 23 optical fibre cables were laid (260 m). The decision was made not to splice new cables, as this reduces costs and customers would not experience any interruptions. The rerouting of the cables was completed in connection with the building of the new RBS underground railway station in Bern, which in turn has cleared the way for the construction work – thanks to this measure, the RBS can start the planned construction activities on time.

The Swiss railway company SBB has realised the largest individual project of the 4m corridor with the completion of the Bözberg tunnel. The new structure gauge EBV 4 enables semi-trailers with a corner height of 4m to be transported by rail. cablex is also involved in this Project.

Due to a fire in one of the PTP distribution box, 15 major customers, more than 300 residential customers and over 20 third-party providers were offline in Volketswil. Usually, the complete replacement of a PTP distribution box takes about three months to complete, but neither cablex nor the affected companies / residential customers had so much time. Working round the clock, cablex did everything it could to get the location back online as quickly as possible.

On Thursday, 23 February, 2017, at 4.00 pm, the cablex Customer Service Desk received a fault notification. The initial diagnosis showed that Kerzers and some of the surrounding communities were cut off from the outside world. Specifically, around 10,000 subscribers had no TV, mobile, fixed network or Internet connection.

In addition, they usually only have restricted access to educational and work opportunities corresponding to their skills. This is where the Capacity initiative comes in. It provides refugees in Switzerland with coaching, further education and networking opportunities and supports them in contributing their ideas and potential to a sustainable Swiss economy through working in a company or establishing their own company.

SBB will upgrade its blue general display boards by the end of 2015. The mechanical split-flat displays are in the process of being replaced by LED technology. SBB is the first company in the public transport sector to employ LED technology. The aims of the project were as follows:  consistent order processing from SAP (CRM, service, work scheduling and preparation, procurement, etc.) to ClickSoftware (logistics) to iPad, faster cycle times, the creation of transparency, the use of new analysis reporting options and the linking of sites via flexible data access. Die SBB modernisiert bis Ende 2015 die blauen Generalanzeiger. Die mechanischen Fallblattanzeiger werden dabei durch LED-Technologie ersetzt. Als erstes Unternehmen in der öV-Branche setzt die SBB LED-Technologie ein. Mit diesen grossflächigen Generalanzeigern kann die Kundeninformation sichtbarer und vor allem flächendeckend in den Bahnhöfen zentral gesteuert und organisiert werden.
