In 2019, the Executive Board of cablex decided to outsource its own logistics services in the area of radio communication to the company Fastlog AG. The reasons for this were limited warehouse capacities as well as the aspiration to implement the future requirements of materials handling in Derendingen and transportation to the construction sites with a strong and professional logistics partner.
In future, double-decker trains are to run on the section between Brig and Lausanne. In order to realise this project of the SBB, a railway bridge in Montreux will be demolished and rebuilt at the same location in line with the new requirements. Pipes run through the existing bridge containing copper and optical fibre cables of Swisscom. At the beginning of June 2020, cablex received the order to reroute these cables to enable the bridge to be demolished. The time frame of two months until demolition was very short...
The Fibre to the Street (FTS) and Business Excellence (BSE) business units have developed an app together during a joint project. A test version of the QA app has been available to selected FTS teams throughout Switzerland since the beginning of May.
16 learners have been the proud owners of a Swiss Federal Certificate of Proficiency for several weeks now. They have successfully completed their apprenticeship and can now get started with their careers. We're delighted that the majority of the graduate apprentices will continue dedicating themselves to cablex.
Of the numerous apprentices in Switzerland who completed their apprenticeships as network electricians in July 2020, two from the ranks of cablex managed to stand out from the crowd.‑ Toni Markov gained the best marks in Switzerland with a grade of 5.7. With a final grade of 5.3, Tomislav Vukovac shared first place in the Canton of Zurich with two other graduates as the best network electrician with a Swiss Federal Certificate of Proficiency. Behind the extremely good achievements of this new generation are very personal motivations and the realisation that it is never too late to dedicate yourself to something.
cablex was involved in modernising the railways at the Swiss Rhine Ports Basel-Kleinhüningen, Birsfelden and Muttenz Auhafen from 2017 to 2020. The Infrastructure Business Unit layed the electrical and data cabling of the safety systems as a subcontractor of Siemens AG. In addition, diverse distribution systems and junction boxes were installed along the tracks. Another bid was won from Hafenbahn Schweiz AG in September 2019 to replace the rail yard lighting in Kleinhüningen.

Markus van Heijningen reports directly to the CFO and will orchestrate the digital transformation at cablex.
Braunwald is located 1300 m above sea level in the southern part of the canton of Glarus. When transporting material, “the sun terrace” shows that it lives up to its name. But it is also clear that the connection of a car-free mountain village entails logistical challenges and a considerable amount of extra work.
Pulling cable is part of daily business at cablex. Nevertheless, each project comes with its own challenges—just like an order that was recently realised: The upfront organisational effort was immense, because a total of 90 kilometres of cable had to be pulled between the Central and West regions, Solothurn, Basel and Jura, the German- and French-speaking language area, across cities and in the country, in road traffic and literally through forests and meadows—and that wasn’t all by a long shot...
The process of capturing biometric data at the passport office or at a national border is well known today; facial image, fingerprints and signature are all recorded. The equipment used for this purpose, which was developed by the company Atos AG, is in use worldwide and requires technical support.

Under the name cablex Academy, the Professional Training unit offers a wide range of specialist and safety courses as well as basic and advanced management training (One Swisscom Academy portfolio). Basic vocational training for the next generation is also provided here, i.e. training of apprentices. The training and further education opportunities are available in three languages, and can be accessed by cablex employees as well as interested external parties.
The Swisscom control centre in the main post office building at Bahnhofsplatz in Schaffhausen has to move - and with it all 50,000 connections. During eight night switchovers, three copper splicers and two CFS switching fitters kept their cool and an overview of thousands of wires and connections.
The employees of cablex have to deal with the issue of safety every day on their construction sites in rail or road traffic, in tunnels, on pavements or on busy roads. Their work does not start with the installation of a traffic light system, for example, but earlier on, as they also have to ensure the construction sites are safe - for their own protection and that of all road users.
At the beginning of 2020, cablex started to perform 5G in-house installations for various customers. The focus throughout Switzerland has initially been placed on Swisscom shops and railway stations. Plans then envisage moving on to shopping centres and football stadiums. The 4x4 MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) technology used results in an enormous increase in speed and capacity.
During work on the trackbed at Lyss railway station, a construction company damaged a cable conduit. Sheet piling which was mechanically rammed into the ground cut through multiple copper and fibreglass cables. There was considerable damage, which meant that 2,200 Swisscom customers had to do without Internet, television, mobile communication and telephones.
Over the last few weeks, the coronavirus crisis has triggered changes in all of cablex's areas of activity. Working conditions have been adapted in many places: there has been a shift to working from home, teams are working with protective equipment on construction sites and some of our colleagues are currently unable to work. Our apprentices are finding themselves in the same situation. We asked them about their experience of this extraordinary time.
Visiting the customer with the necessary protective equipment is also part of everyday life for our Field Service employees during the corona crisis. A little effort can have a big impact. By following the protective and hygienic measures recommended by the FOPH and correctly using the protective equipment provided by cablex, we can not only protect our customers but also our colleagues.
The use of protective measures to prevent infection with Covid-19 is already practised on all cablex construction sites. Elias and Philipp from the Oftringen site have made themselves available to demonstrate the correct handling of the protective equipment. Insights into working on the construction site in times of the Corona Pandemic show that although protection is indispensable, it is also complex in everyday working life. At the same time, the use of protective equipment such as face masks, goggles and gloves shown here can be applied to all areas of everyday life.
You can't have enough speed when it comes to surfing, gaming or streaming via the Internet. cablex is therefore connecting all communities in Switzerland to the fast optical fibre network, which is replacing the "old" copper cable infrastructure. The communities of Ober- and Unterentfelden are also being upgraded with optical fibre – but where does the cable come from and how does it get into the shaft?
On 8 April, cablex received a very high priority incident notification: The drilling machine of a construction company cut several optical fibre and copper cables during the course of its work. As a result of this, several thousand customers in Bulle, Rougemont, Charmey and Château-d'Œx had no access to the Internet, Swisscom TV, mobile telephony and fixed network telephony. cablex is proud of the untiring and committed work of everyone involved on site and says: "Chapeau et merci beaucoup!"
The new cablex B-Site in Schmerikon has been ready to be moved into since 1 March 2020. The Fibre to the Street (FTS) business unit can look back at a successful year: In 2019, 137 municipalities were physically accepted with a success rate of 90 per cent. However, the positive figures are not only an expression of a positive financial year, but rather they are primarily also the result of constant optimisation and hence the result of a continuous development process by the business unit over the course of the past few years. But what is behind the abstract information about constant optimisation and a continuous development process? In the interview with cablex Communications, Christian Rossi, Head of the FTS business unit, explains the six most important reasons for the success of his business unit.
Anyone can see that coronavirus is currently having an enormous impact on life in Switzerland. As part of a Swisscom taskforce and within the cablex crisis team, we have also been working intensively on this topic since the end of January 2020, and we are aware that fear and uncertainty are rife in many places. Our greatest concern is the protection of our employees, customers and Partners.

This is also confirmed by Roger Huggler, Head of Regions Central and South of Customer Field Service at cablex in the following interview.
New technologies offer many ways to create a digital map (digital twin) of an entire infrastructure. Technical systems are extremely cost-intensive to operate. To maintain reliable transport operation while taking safety and environmental aspects into account, potential risks must be evaluated and safeguarded against well into the future. The Test and Training Facility of the Ceneri Base Tunnel is a practical example of how cablex uses digital solutions to simplify processes. cablex implemented the project, called TUSA 4, on behalf of SBB.
The civil work activities at the Unterentfelden site have had a new mobile excavator since January. It was possible to put the vehicle, which has a lifting capacity of up to 1,500 kg, to immediate use in the excavation work undertaken as part of a sewer diversion.

When the streets of Zermatt are still free of snow in the off-season and the number of tourists is still relatively low, the construction machines move into the well-known Valais mountain village. In a breath-taking autumn atmosphere, cablex installed 250 micro CANs in 12 lots on behalf of Swisscom. At 130 locations, fibre is being laid into the buildings (Fibre to the Building or FTTB) and at 120 locations it will run up to the nearest shaft, Fibre to the Street (FTTS). The construction period of the project is three years, as the construction work in car-free Zermatt can only be carried out in May and October.

Fibre optic cable connections from a central exchange to the apartments, which will provide a very high data transmission capacity, is increasingly being demanded by many building owners. Such as is the case with the LimmatSpot project in Spreitenbach. For UPC, this means exploring new avenues and new types of development to meet the needs of the construction industry. Fibre optic cabling in buildings, i.e. utilisation of the fibre optic connections provided within a building, is new territory for UPC and is only used in larger, new buildings. This project is one of the first of its kind - and cablex was commissioned to implement it.
