Overhead lines – the lifelines of the modern world.

Working on overhead lines is very physically demanding: At a height of around eight metres, strength and stamina are required. Overhead lines are still justified today. They ensure a stable network that reliably supplies Switzerland with Internet and telephony – even in the most remote areas.

Overhead lines have been built for a century. Today, there are around half a million masts across the country. Overhead lines are lines that run above the earth's surface. They are used in remote or rural areas, as the local conditions usually do not permit the construction of underground lines.

How is an overhead line maintained?

The main tasks of our technical teams in the area of overhead lines include both preventive and corrective activities. Corrective maintenance focuses on rectifying faults, while preventive maintenance involves carrying out regular inspections and maintenance work on the mast. Of course, new overhead lines are also installed.

A lot of manual work on overhead lines.

Work on overhead lines is largely manual in nature, with conventional tools such as shovels being used. Occasionally, a rudimentary approach is chosen with a "post hole digger" (also: amateur excavator), although its usage options are limited. cablex is always trying to find new ways and tools to make work easier for employees. A significant improvement came with the introduction of a new crane trailer, which has been in use at cablex for a year now. This supports employees and significantly improves health protection.
