Cable destroyed – large-scale operation in 24-hour shifts.

All households in Zurich-Schwamendingen were looking forward to Christmas and a well-deserved break over the festive season. However, this joy was dampened somewhat for around 600 customers of various network providers in the early afternoon of 16 December 2021.

Cable destroyed – large-scale operation in 24-hour shifts.

The reason?

Excavation work was being carried out on a construction site very close to a Swisscom telephone exchange. An earth drill was being used to loosen the deeper layers of rock. This hit a conduit block that had been laid in the ground. Unfortunately, the drilling process continued and, as a result, the conduit block was completely severed and countless cables were destroyed as they wrapped around the earth drill.

Extent of the damage.

Many cables were partially severed and some were completely severed on the construction site. The team of cablex technicians was on site in no time at all and began with the repair work. When the incident was reported, it very quickly became apparent that major damage had occurred not only at the construction site but also at the nearby Swisscom exchange in Zurich-Schwamendingen.

The digger had pulled the cables out of the ground and coiled them up with so much force that entire consoles were torn out of the wall in the local exchange. The cablex teams were therefore split up and were on continuous duty at both locations in 24-hour shifts.

Back online on 24 December.

The cablex team managed to get all affected customers back online at 7:00 a.m. on 24 December 2021, just in time for Christmas. A great achievement to close the year 2021. And our colleagues are already out in the field again this year, dealing with fault reports and implementing complex infrastructures and services throughout Switzerland.

It is nice to see how willing colleagues are to stand up for each other and to work together in a curious, trustworthy, committed and passionate manner.
