Super G St. Moritz Herospace 16-9

Fast Internet for the Super G World Cup races.

On 11 and 12 December 2021 in St. Moritz, the slopes were once again cleared for the Women’s Super G World Cup races. There was definitely no lack of snow this year. On the contrary – the hard-working helpers were busy preparing the slopes for the races right up to the last minute on Friday evening following the heavy snowfall.

The Canton of the Grisons had granted the athletes exemption permits for entry into Switzerland, subject to conditions, thus easing the quarantine requirements. The persons who were absolutely required to be present for the races were thus able to travel to St. Moritz without the ten-day quarantine period.

While five Swiss contestants were able to secure good places among the top 20 skiers, our cablex technician Clà Luzzi ensured in the background that all transmissions were working without any problems. He was supported in this work by Ives Huggler, a mediamatics technician in his first year as an apprentice at Swisscom.

Internet infrastructure for EVERYONE.

cablex was responsible for the entire Internet infrastructure in the area around the finishing line of the local mountain of St. Moritz. This included both the cabling of the media centre as well as the installation of the fibre optic switches to the broadcasting vans and reporters’ booths.

Apart from the various TV channels, it was the athletes in particular who benefited from the fast Internet. They were able to use the networks without having to pay expensive roaming fees. Some of the outdoor work was very challenging. Laying the cables for comprehensive WiFi coverage was not always easy in the icy temperatures and snow.

A professional at work.

Clà Luzzi, ICT technician in the area of Field Services, was working on the job for cablex, as he has been for many years. He lives very close to St. Moritz and knows the local conditions very well.

I have been doing this kind of work for Swisscom Event & Media Solutions (SEM) for a long time now and I was even at the World Cup in 2017. It makes a nice change from daily business and you can really get to grips with things. Whether you’re outside laying cables under the grandstand, sometimes at -20°C, or inside installing the fibre optics for the TV stations. You often have to improvise because you don’t always find what you’ve planned at the site.

The next winter event assignments by cablex are already being planned. cablex will also be responsible for setting up the technological infrastructure at the World Cup races in Adelboden and the international Lauberhorn ski races in Wengen in January 2022.
